2024 Fantasy Outlook
Burton will enter his tenth year in the NFL this season, operating as the fullback for the Broncos in his second year with the team. Prior to joining Denver in 2023, the veteran also played for Detroit, Chicago, Washington, New Orleans and Kansas City. Burton will look to return to his role as a lead blocker for the Broncos' rushing attack, as the 32-year-old was minimally involved in the offensive attack while seeing just seven carries and three targets last season. 2015
Burton has held a lead blocking role for four different teams over the last six seasons and will add a fifth in Kansas City for the 2021 campaign, assuming he holds on to a roster spot out of training camp. He doesn't typically present much upside as a rusher or receiver, posting a maximum of seven carries (2020) in a season and at most six targets (2015).
Burton's entering his third year in the league, and he's carried the football four times for two yards. He'll be competing with rookie Freddie Stevenson for a roster spot. Should he make the team, he'll likely see limited snaps, and he's unlikely to see many rushing attempts, as he'll primarily be a blocker.
Burton was rarely relied upon to rush the football in 2015, and, now entering his second season in the league, that doesn’t figure to change in 2016; the Lions simply prefer to utilize more traditional running backs in a “big-back” type of role. Hence, short-yardage duties will likely be allotted to the likes of either Stevan Ridley or Zach Zenner. While Burton may see opportunities to catch checkdown passes out of the backfield, he is not an imposing threat to vulture goal-line rushing attempts and is firmly off the fantasy radar.
At first blush, a rookie fullback/H-back shouldn't draw any attention, but offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi was part of teams in New Orleans that utilized fullbacks much more extensively than competitors. From 2011-2103, Saints fullback Jed Collins scored seven total touchdowns and H-Back David Thomas added five more in 2012. Burton caught 47 passes out of the backfield during his career at Rutgers, making it into the end zone three times.
