Cody Barton

28-Year-Old LinebackerLB
Denver Broncos
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Barton signed a one-year deal with Denver this offseason after appearing in 13 games with the Commanders in 2023. Despite missing four games on IR with an ankle injury last season, the 27-year-old managed to have a solid campaign while recording 121 tackles (67 solo), one interception and one fumble recovery. Barton is a favorite to start at inside linebacker alongside Alex Singleton, and he'll look to make an immediate impact as a member of what should be a formidable linebacker corps. Read Past Outlooks

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Barton started only five games in his first three years with the Seahawks, despite being a 2019 third-round pick, but he finally broke out in 2022 for 136 tackles in 17 games (11 starts). He also had two sacks and two interceptions, with some struggles in coverage and against the run. In March, Barton settled for a one-year, $3.5 million contract in Washington, where Jamin Davis profiles as the top linebacker after Cole Holcomb's offseason departure. Barton should get a lot of snaps, but perhaps not as many as his 862 in Seattle last year (77 percent share).
Bobby Wagner was cut this offseason, meaning Jordyn Brooks - who was second in the NFL with 184 tackles last season - will take over as the team's defensive play caller. The Seahawks didn't make any big moves in the draft or free agency to replace Wagner, so Barton has a clear path to a starting gig. A 2019 third-round pick, Barton still is at risk of losing the job if the Seahawks add a veteran, but if he secures it for Week 1, his IDP upside could be massive. After all, Wagner managed to post 170 tackles even with Brooks having a career year.

Fighting for starting job
LBDenver Broncos
June 25, 2024
Barton is competing with Jonas Griffith for a starting middle linebacker role, Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Barton has worked as a starter for the last two seasons with the Seahawks and Commanders and been extremely productive, tallying a combined 257 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions. Even so, he's not locked into a starting job heading into training camp. Griffith has played only 557 combined defensive snaps across his first two seasons in the NFL, so Barton presumably has the early edge in the competition.
