Allen was drafted in the fifth round by the Rams in 2023 and proceeded to spend his rookie season backing up Tyler Higbee. Allen caught 10 of 11 targets for 95 yards and one touchdown in 15 appearances. Higbee is expected to miss a significant chunk of 2024 after tearing his ACL in the playoffs, and the Rams signed Colby Parkinson to start while Higbee’s sidelined. Allen’s expected to remain in a backup role barring an injury to Parkinson, and the second-year tight end out of Clemson is in danger of slipping another rung down the depth chart if Higbee’s able to make it back in 2024. ANALYSIS
Listed as questionable leading up to Thursday due to the shoulder injury, Allen received clearance to play but didn't carve out much of a role on offense. He finished third among Rams tight ends in snaps, trailing Colby Parkinson (32) and Hunter Long (22). With the Rams activated Tyler Higbee (knee) from the PUP list Tuesday in anticipation that he makes his season debut Sunday against the Jets, Allen could be a candidate for the inactive list.

The Rams looked to bolster their depth at tight end in taking Allen with a fifth-round pick, and while the Clemson product stands tall at 6-foot-6, a smaller frame (245 pounds) and lack of speed may have contributed to his meager production in the college ranks, with an 88-1,039-12 line over 43 games. With little established talent behind starter Tyler Higbee, however, Allen may have a chance to earn a backup role as a rookie.
