2024 Fantasy Outlook
After ranking as a top-5 fantasy quarterback four of his five years as a starter (twice as No. 1), Mahomes fell to a career-low QB8 last season. He got little help from his wide receivers, who struggled to stretch the field and dropped a league-high 28 passes -- 12.0 percent of catchable targets. A quarter of Mahomes’ attempts were at or behind the line of scrimmage and two-thirds were within 10 yards of the line, both career highs, as his average target depth dropped to a career-low 6.5 yards and his YPA followed suit at 7.0. Mahomes also saw a predictable decrease in red-zone pass attempts after the previous season's NFL-record 123, which led to 10 fewer TD passes inside the 20-yard line. Having perhaps the greatest tight end in NFL history covers a lot of ills, however, and Mahomes will again have Travis Kelce as his favorite target this season. No. 1 WR Rashee Rice, who came on strong late last year, could be suspended, but the team signed fleet-footed Marquise Brown and drafted Xavier Worthy, a first-round pick who ran a 4.21 40 at the Combine -- the fastest since at least 2003. That’s likely a better group than Mahomes had to begin last year, which, coupled with positive regression in red-zone attempts and rushing scores (none last season), has him poised for a return to the top 5 among fantasy quarterbacks. RANKS
Inactive for Week 18
Mahomes (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Mahomes had been listed as doubtful heading into the weekend due to the mild right high-ankle sprain he sustained in a Dec. 15 win over the Browns, but he played through the injury at a high level in the Chiefs' last two contests, completing 57 of 79 pass attempts for 580 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions while adding 45 yards and another score on the ground between wins over the Texans and Steelers. With the Chiefs entering Week 18 having secured the AFC's No. 1 seed, Mahomes will get some rest in the regular-season finale along with several other key veterans. Carson Wentz will direct the offense in Denver, but there's no doubt that Mahomes will be back in the lineup when Kansas City kicks off its postseason in the divisional round.

Mahomes entered last season with questions about how he would fare without speedster Tyreek Hill for the first time. All he did was finish QB1 in fantasy, claim another MVP, win another Super Bowl and prove he’s the best quarterback on the planet. How he did it, though, is the interesting part. Mahomes threw deep on a career-low 8.2 percent of his attempts, 24th in the league. Instead, he chewed up the intermediate field -- no quarterback had more attempts than Mahomes’ 173 in the range of 8-18 yards. That’s a logical strategy when you have the NFL’s best tight end in Travis Kelce. He and his teammates totaled a league-high 2,850 yards after the catch, 54.2 percent of Mahomes’ career-high 5,250 passing yards, giving him league’s second-highest YPA at 8.1. Mahomes also capitalized on a league-high 72 red-zone drives for 34 of his league-leading 41 TD passes. A slight regression there is possible, and JuJu Smith-Schuster (78 catches) is gone. But Marquez Valdes-Scantling is back as the deep threat, Kadarius Toney -- who joined K.C. midseason last year -- is likely to get more work, and the team drafted WR Rashee Rice in the second round. The offensive line is still solid, with Jawaan Taylor replacing Orlando Brown. And, of course, there’s Kelce, with whom Mahomes teamed for a 118.7 passer rating, the third highest by a QB-receiver tandem in the league (min. 75 targets). Throw in another 350 yards and a couple scores on the ground and Mahomes could be one of the few QBs to repeat as QB1.

Sitting out Sunday
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that Mahomes will not play in Sunday's game against the Broncos, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mahomes is dealing with a mild high-ankle sprain he originally suffered Week 15 against the Browns. The signal-caller played through the injury in stellar fashion over the last two games while helping the Chiefs lock up the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, and he'll now get a chance to rest in the regular-season finale. Carson Wentz will draw the Week 18 start in place of Mahomes, who will now get over three weeks to heal up before the Chiefs open their postseason Jan. 18 or 19 in the divisional round.
