Sam Hubbard

Sam Hubbard

29-Year-Old Defensive EndDE
Cincinnati Bengals
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Hubbard is overshadowed by teammate Trey Hendrickson, but he has emerged as a key player along the Bengals' defensive line with steady and reliable play. He is among the best run defenders in the league among edge players and also provides some pass-rush presence. That makes it pretty easy to set expectations, as Hubbard has between 58 and 62 tackles in each of his last four seasons and has at least six sacks in each of the last three. If there is a shortcoming to point to, it's been Hubbard's propensity to miss games. He's failed to play a full season since 2018 -- his rookie season - though he has played in at least 15 contests in the last three years. Read Past Outlooks

Hubbard (knee) was not listed on the Bengals' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hubbard sustained a knee injury in late July, which kept him out of practice for most of training camp. He went through individual work in late August, and he now appears healthy enough to return to team drills ahead of the Bengals' regular-season opener against the Patriots on Sunday. Across 15 regular-season games in 2023, Hubbard registered 58 tackles (38 solo), including 6.0 sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Hubbard has become one of the pillars of the Bengals' defense after being drafted in the third round in 2018, recording at least 60 tackles in four consecutive seasons and at least six sacks in four of his five NFL campaigns. While his career high in the latter category is just 8.5, making him more of a floor player than upside asset for fantasy purposes, his run-stuffing prowess and ability to seal the edge makes him a perfect complement to Trey Hendrickson in the Cincinnati pass rush. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has had Hubbard at his disposal for his entire tenure with the team, so there should be no surprises in terms of usage.
Hubbard fits into the IDP category of modest ceiling, high floor. That’s because he’s only an average pass rusher, capping his typical year-end sack production around eight most of the time, which in turn limits his upside. He offsets this somewhat with uncommon tackle production, which helps raise his floor. For leagues that emphasize sacks or devalue tackles, Hubbard should be ranked much lower.
Although he'll probably never be among the league leaders for sacks, Hubbard piles up tackles at a high rate playing the edge defender in Cincinnati's hybrid defense, thus offering a high IDP floor. An elbow injury suffered in Week 5 last season cost Hubbard three games and presumably limited him in others, so with better luck in 2021 he should breeze past last year's numbers. He has 138 tackles on his last 1,535 snaps, so in a 17-game timeline his new tackle floor is about 80. If Hubbard could get to the quarterback more often he would have major IDP upside.
It might be a bit early to say it, but it seems like Hubbard has arrived as one of the league's top defensive ends. He showed the ability to log a high snap count (871 in 15 games) in 2019 and for the second year in a row converted his snaps into tackles and sacks at a high rate. Through 1,378 career snaps, Hubbard has 115 tackles and 14.5 sacks, which roughly projects to 76 tackles and 9.6 sacks over 910 snaps. According to Mockdraftable.com, Hubbard's 6.84-second three-cone time is a top 66th percentile figure by cornerback standards, so for him to run that at 6-5, 270 makes it easy to believe he'll keep up his productive ways.
Hubbard enjoyed a strong rookie season as a third-round pick out of Ohio State last year, and he's now set to see his workload increase, especially considering the ACL tear suffered by teammate Carl Lawson. Hubbard could push for 800 snaps this year after playing 507 as a rookie, and that he posted six sacks on that snap count gives reason to hope for double-digit sack upside. While Hubbard lacks pure speed (4.95 40), his explosiveness and quickness make him disruptive at the point of attack, which bodes well for his tackle projection.

Says he's in best shape of career
DECincinnati Bengals
July 9, 2023
Hubbard believes he's in the best shape of his career heading into the 2023 season, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports. "This is the best I've felt in my whole career by a landslide physically," Hubbard said.
ANALYSIS
Hubbard added that his goals are to win the Super Bowl and reach double-digit sacks in the regular season. He almost accomplished both goals in 2021, as Hubbard had 7.5 sacks in the regular season and three more in the playoffs while the Bengals reached the Super Bowl before losing to the Rams. Hubbard missed two games in 2022 due to a calf injury but believes an improved fitness routine will help him avoid injuries and increase his effectiveness moving forward.
