The 2023 fourth-round pick didn't suit up for a single game in his rookie campaign, suffering a shoulder injury before spending the remainder of the season on the reserve/non-football illness list with what turned out to be a case of burnout. The Rams picked up veteran Jimmy Garoppolo on a one-year deal to serve as a backup with Bennett's status unclear, and the two will likely compete for the primary backup role to incumbent Matthew Stafford. Coach Sean McVay announced Bennett will serve as the Rams' primary backup to begin the season while Jimmy Garoppolo serves his two-game suspension, Stu Jackson of the team's official website reports.

McVay said Bennett "did a good job" this preseason, finishing the summer having gone 41 of 69 passing (59.4 percent) for 437 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions. He added nothing with his legs, finishing with four yards and one fumble on four attempts. Garoppolo will be Matthew Stafford's backup once his suspension concludes. The Rams could then face a decision on whether to keep Bennett on the 53-man roster or subject him to waivers.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
The Rams saw enough in Bennett to spend a fourth-round pick on the 25-year-old quarterback in April. A two-time national champion with a winning pedigree - 29-3 as a starter at Georgia - he boasts great reliability, good awareness in the pocket and the ability to limit turnovers (66:21 TD:INT), but he also starts his NFL career on the higher end in terms of age. He also doesn't have plus physical attributes, with a small 5-11, 190-pound frame, and will be an understudy to Matthew Stafford for at least the next few seasons barring retirement or a trade. Bennett and recent signee Brett Rypien will compete for the backup role, but significant snaps in 2023 for Bennett are unlikely.
