Tyquan Thornton

24-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
New England Patriots
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Over the first two years of his pro career, Thornton, a 2022 second-rounder, has had trouble staying on the field and been limited to 35 catches in 22 contests. With an eye toward holding up better, the 6-2, 185-pounder sought to bulk up ahead of this season. Thornton's speed remains his calling card, and that's what could help him stick around if he has a strong summer under the tutelage of new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. On the plus side, Thornton, 24, figures to have a clean slate with the team's new coaching staff, but the Baylor product has plenty of competition for targets in a crowded wideout corps that lacks a clear pecking order ahead of training camp. Thornton logged 31 of 68 snaps on offense in Sunday's 23-20 overtime loss to the Seahawks, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornton, who was out-snapped by K.J. Osborn (51 snaps), Ja'Lynn Polk (41 snaps) and DeMario Douglas (38 snaps), was not targeted in the contest. As Thursday night's game against the Jets approaches, the 2022 second-rounder is only a lineup option in the deepest of formats.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
The Patriots traded up for Thornton in the second round of the 2022 Draft, but he was largely a complementary piece in New England's receiving corps as a rookie, with Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor also in the mix. Now that Meyers (Las Vegas) and Agholor (Baltimore) are elsewhere, Thornton should improve on last year's numbers - 22-247-2 line on 45 targets in 13 games - given the likelihood that he'll see increased volume alongside the two key holdovers and newcomer JuJu Smith-Schuster. Thornton has a slight frame at 6-2, 182 pounds, but he recorded a 4.28-second 40-yard dash during last year's combine, and with wheels like that, he has a chance to make his mark as a deep threat in 2023.
New England moved up in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft to take Thornton 50th overall. Though some thought that may have been a reach, there's no question the Patriots landed one of the fastest players in his draft class. Thornton, whom the Patriots list at 6-2, 182 pounds, logged an official 4.28-second 40-yard dash, and on top of that he was a convincingly productive player in college. He reportedly did solid work at his first training camp, but then suffered a collarbone injury in the preseason and is now expected to miss at least the first month and a half of the regular season. Once he's ready, Thornton could work as an occasional deep threat off the bench, or perhaps be more than that if the Patriots' veteran wideouts are injured/ineffective.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to make 53-man roster
WRNew England Patriots
August 10, 2024
Thornton saw his chances at making the Patriots' 53-man roster increase following the release of wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Smith-Schuster was the odd man out of the Patriots' wide receiver corps that's made up of young players like Thornton, Demario Douglas and rookie second-round pick Ja'Lynn Polk. Thornton played just seven snaps in New England's 17-3 preseason win over Carolina on Thursday, which Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site notes is usually an indicator that the player's spot on the 53-man roster is safe. In nine regular-season games in 2023, Thornton accumulated 13 catches on 23 targets for 91 yards while adding 51 rushing yards and three carries.
