Draws preseason start
McNichols carried the ball five times for 23 yards in Sunday's 20-10 preseason win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
McNichols had been vying for the third spot on the running back depth chart with Chris Rodriguez throughout camp. He appears to have the upper hand, as he started the game and was the only back to get a carry or target through Washington's first two offensive possessions. That suggests he'll be active and may get a few snaps in a Week 1 matchup against Tampa Bay, though his role is likely to be minimal.

2017
McNichols appeared destined to be mostly a special teams role player after three seasons as a professional. However, in 2020, he managed a career-high 271 offensive snaps which translated to 47 rushing attempts, 12 receptions and 259 total yards as Derrick Henry's primary backup. Heading into 2021, McNichols may find it difficult to maintain that role. The Titans invested a third-round pick in Darrynton Evans in the 2020 draft, though he was sidelined by various injuries for much of his rookie season. The team also added Brian Hill as a free agent in the offseason. Both moves will likely shift McNichols back to primarily a special teams role and without much fantasy upside in sight.

Depth option for Niners
McNichols was brought in for a workout by the 49ers on Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Elijah Mitchell is once again banged up, and while he should be recovered from his adductor strain in time for Week 1, San Francisco's other backup RBs are inexperienced behind Christian McCaffrey. McNichols, who made his NFL debut with the Niners in 2017, was one of four backs the team took a look at Monday, a group that also featured Brian Hill, Duke Johnson and Jason Huntley. Regardless of whether San Francisco signs any of them, McCaffrey's job as the starter isn't in any jeopardy.
