Metchie missed the 2022 season while dealing with health issues. Upon his return in 2023, the receiver was a minor part of the Texans offense. On the season, he averaged one catch for 9.9 yards while not scoring a touchdown. It seemed as if Metchie had an opportunity to seize a larger role. During the season, Houston had to play without Tank Dell and Noah Brown for extended periods while Nico Collins and Robert Woods also missed time. Metchie appears to have used Collins' absence to win the No. 3 receiver role, slotting behind Collins and Tank Dell. Metchie (39 snaps) was on the field more than Xavier Hutchinson (28) or Robert Woods (20) and has 11 receptions on 15 targets for 136 yards and one touchdown over the last four weeks. Metchie's playing time could take a hit in the coming weeks when the Texans feel comfortable giving Collins more than the 30 snaps he had Monday.

Metchie, a second-round pick out of Alabama in 2022, never got on the field after being diagnosed with leukemia last summer. The 22-year-old overcame the illness and participated in a voluntary late-April camp in preparation for normal offseason activities and training camp. With Brandin Cooks traded and Nico Collins still needing to prove himself, there's an opportunity for Metchie and the team's other young wideouts to see ample playing time. Metchie was expected to be a significant part of the offense last season, but there are no guarantees for 2023, particularly with a new offensive brain trust in place.
