2024 Fantasy Outlook
No player better represents the idea that just about any running back can thrive in Kyle Shanahan's offense than Mason. Undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2022, Mason has averaged 5.6 yards per carry for the 49ers, and while he lacks breakaway speed, his power and sheer refusal to go down have resulted in some impressive yards after contact in a small sample. The 49ers backfield seemingly got more crowded this offseason when they drafted Isaac Guerendo in the fourth round, but it ended up working out well for Mason when Guerendo and Elijah Mitchell both missed most of training camp with injuries. Mitchell was then place on season-ending injured reserve in late August, leaving Mason as the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey to start the season. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Rushes for 100 yards in Week 2
Mason took 20 carries for 100 yards and a rushing touchdown while bringing in his lone target for four yards in Sunday's 23-17 loss to Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Mason followed up his impressive Week 1 fantasy performance (28/147/1) with another game of 100-plus rushing yards and his second touchdown of the season. Savvy fantasy managers who snagged Mason when starter Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles) and backup Elijah Mitchell (knee) were ruled out prior to last week's win over the Jets have been rewarded handsomely. What appeared to be a hot short-term add is beginning to look like an league-changing acquisition after the aforementioned CMC was placed on injured reserve prior to Sunday's defeat (Week 7 earliest potential return). Mitchell has been ruled out for the entire year, so Mason is set to occupy the lead role in Kyle Shanahan's vaunted zone-run offense for roughly the first half of the fantasy campaign. It would behoove GMs in all fantasy formats to make sure that the Georgia Tech product is not lingering on their league's waiver wire ahead of Sunday's tilt against the Rams.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Mason fought his way onto the 49ers' 53-man roster last preseason and suited up for 19 of the team's 20 games (including playoffs). The undrafted rookie spent most of the year on special teams, but he was able to get some run as a backup in the second half of the schedule. Mason performed particularly well over a three-game stretch from Weeks 13-15, when he accrued 171 rushing yards on just 23 attempts. The Georgia Tech product should return as San Francisco's third running back in 2023 behind Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell.

Multi-game starting stint possible
Mason is a candidate to serve as the 49ers' starting running back beyond Sunday's Week 2 game against the Vikings, as San Francisco is considering placing Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve with a designation to return, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
Mason was the talk of the league after Monday night's win over the Jets, when he filled in for McCaffrey and rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Mason is already confirmed to fill the lead-back role again in Week 2 with McCaffrey ruled out, and with head coach Kyle Shanahan conceding Friday that IR is now a consideration for the star running back, Mason's run at the helm of the backfield could endure at least three additional games beyond Sunday's.
