Arizona Diamondbacks
Team: Arizona Diamondbacks
Total Saves: 36
Next in Line: A.J. Puk , Ryan Thompson
(9/3) Justin Martinez has stabilized as the D'Backs' closer, recording the 7 saves for Arizona. His 1.35 WHIP over the last month and 1.24 WHIP overall could be better, but the rookie right-hander clearly has the "stuff" fit for the 9th-inning, averaging 100.2 mph on his fastball while mixing it with a devastating splitter that opposing batters have trouble squaring up against (.087 BAA). Paul Sewald, who was demoted from Arizona's closer role in July, has been much better of late (3.75 ERA, 1.08 WHIP since Aug 1), but it doesn't appear he'll be getting his job back anytime soon. If things do turn south for Martinez, manager Torey Lovullo has a deep bullpen to deploy as Arizona continues its playoff push, with A.J. Puk, Ryan Thompson, Kevin Ginkel and Dylan Floro all capable of stepping into closing duties.

Atlanta Braves
Team: Atlanta Braves
Total Saves: 37
(9/3) Raisel Iglesias isn't getting the attention he deserves this season. Perhaps it's because he's not striking out many batters in 2024 - his 27.1% strikeout rate is his lowest since 2016 - but his 0.61 WHIP is the best among qualified relievers and he ranks 7th in the league with 28 saves. Atlanta has been plagued by injuries to key players this season, which caps Iglesias' save upside since they aren't winning as many games as expected. With A.J. Minter (hip) currently on the shelf and needing surgery, Joe Jimenez and Pierce Johnson represent the best option for ancillary saves if Iglesias is unavailable.

  1. 6/29:A.J. Minter, who logged his first save of the season Tuesday at Philadelphia, has appeared in 3 games in 4 days. This makes Will Smith the likeliest candidate for a save chance if one were to arise Wednesday.
Baltimore Orioles
Team: Baltimore Orioles
Total Saves: 44
Next in Line: Yennier Cano Day-To-Day, Craig Kimbrel
(9/3) Seranthony Dominguez has recorded 7 of the Orioles' past 9 saves since August 1st, but his appearances haven't always been sharp. The veteran righty has served up 5 home runs since that date - all solo homers and all in different outings. Dominguez has made up for it, though, with a 1.00 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB over his last 12 innings. Craig Kimbrel hasn't recorded a save in well over a month (July 7th) and won't be challenging Dominguez for the closer role any time soon. He allowed seven runs over 8.2 innings last month with a 8:5 K:BB and his ratios look a tad inflated. Baltimore's pen has been shaky in general during the second half, which figures to give Dominguez some leash.

Boston Red Sox
Team: Boston Red Sox
Total Saves: 37
Next in Line: Liam Hendriks 60-Day IL, Chris Martin
(9/3) Boston recently swapped a pair of relievers on the IL, welcoming the returns of Chris Martin and Justin Slaten, but replacing them with their 2 relief acquisitions at the trade deadline - Lucas Sims (lat) and Luis Garcia (elbow). More importantly, Liam Hendriks (elbow) is expected to return this weekend, providing some added experience in the late-innings ahead of closer Kenley Jansen. Jansen posted an outstanding 0.40 WHIP over 10 August innings in August and currently ranks tied for 8th with 25 saves. Jansen has a respectable 73.5% team save share and figures to close out the year in the role.

Team Notes
  1. 6/27:Tanner Houck was placed on the restricted list Monday prior to Boston's three-game series at Toronto. Matt Strahm and John Schreiber are the likeliest candidates for save opportunities should any arise during the series.
  2. 10/11:Hansel Robles exited Game 3 of the ALDS on Sunday due to a stomach illness after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. He should be considered day-to-day due to his illness. Assuming he tests negative for COVID-19, it wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander available for Game 4 on Monday. It was the first earned run he's allowed since August 29.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game against the Yankees, Hansel Robles has not allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive outings. Both he and Adam Ottavino enter tonight's contest with two-days rest, while Garrett Richards and Garrett Whitlock have had one day of rest after both pitched on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs
Team: Chicago Cubs
Total Saves: 34
Closer: Committee
(9/3) The Cubs have made several bullpen changes since the trade deadline. First they shipped Mark Leiter to the Yankees and acquired Nate Pearson from Toronto. They also released veteran Hector Neris. Since then, it has been a closer-by-committee in Chicago, with Porter Hodge, Jorge Lopez and Keegan Thompson all recording saves since mid-August. Hodge stands out as the leader of the pack, as he's currently in the best form.

Cincinnati Reds

Total Saves: 34
Closer: Alexis Diaz
(9/3) Alexis Diaz has compiled poor ratios and a 13.2% walk rate through early September, but his security as the Reds closer doesn't appear to be in question, even after blowing a few saves recently. The Reds have slipped in the NL Wild Card standings, so it's always a possibility that they afford others save chances as the season winds down, but Diaz remains "the guy" for now.

Cleveland Guardians
Team: Cleveland Guardians
Total Saves: 50
(9/3) After leading MLB in saves the past two seasons, Emmanuel Clase is once again near the top of the leaderboard at the beginning of September. The hard-throwing righty is one save behind league-leader Ryan Helsley (42) and is displaying impeccable control while slightly improving his strikeout rate. With 2023 setup man Trevor Stephan (elbow) out for the year, Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis and Tim Herrin have ascended the leverage ladder to important setup roles.

Colorado Rockies
Team: Colorado Rockies
Total Saves: 35
Closer: Committee
(9/3) Colorado's bullpen was impacted by the relievers they traded away. Jalen Beeks led the Rockies with nine saves prior to his trade to Pittsburgh, while Nick Mears - who may have ascended the Rockies' leverage ladder in Beeks' absence - was also dealt to Milwaukee. Victor Vodnik (biceps) got some run as the Rockies' closer, but is currently on the shelf. Tyler Kinley has picked up two saves since then and figures to remain in the role while Vodnik is out.

Chicago White Sox
Team: Chicago White Sox
Total Saves: 19
Closer: Committee
(9/3) The White Sox have only recorded 1 save since mid-July; that going to Chad Kuhl on August 16th. They've lost 37 of their past 41 games, so it's kind of hard to tell who could benefit from potential save chances since winning games has been challenging, to say the least. Prelander Berroa and Jordan Leasure (shoulder) have closer-of-the-future upside, but the latter is currently on the IL. No one else really stands out from a team that is playing this poorly.

Detroit Tigers
Team: Detroit Tigers
Total Saves: 38

(9/9) Jason Foley and Tyler Holton are basically splitting closing duties, with Foley recording 5 of the Tigers' last 8 saves compared to Holton's 3. Foley is in excellent form, having not permitted an earned run since July 30 while compiling a 0.67 WHIP over his last 15 innings. He leads Detroit with 21 saves in 24 chances. Holton has been as equally impressive lately, recording a 0.81 ERA and 0.58 WHIP since August 1. He's posted a career-high 7 saves and counting and is capable of pitching more than one inning at a time, even opening for Detroit 7 times through 58 appearances.

Closer: Josh Hader
(9/9) Josh Hader's 2024 campaign is flying under-the-radar. The southpaw is tied for 6th in the league with 29 saves through early August and he's racked up 90 strikeouts through 61.1 innings. Hader has been homer-prone this season with 11 HR allowed (1.6 HR/9), but he's limiting free passes with a much-improved 8.8% walk rate. His 0.93 WHIP is his lowest since 2021 and he has posted a career-high 7 wins and counting. He's likely to surpass 100 strikeouts on the season for the first time since 2021.

  1. 7/1:Ryan Pressly has recorded a Save in each of the past 2 days. He has yet to work 3 games in a row this season, so it's likely a save chance would go to Rafael Montero on Friday.
  2. 9/29:Ryan Pressly is currently managing a knee issue and hasn't pitched since Saturday. Kendall Graveman was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. Look for Ryne Stanek or Yimi Garcia as the favorites to pitch in potential save opportunities for the next couple days if Pressley remains unavailable.
Kansas City Royals
Team: Kansas City Royals
Total Saves: 37
Closer: Lucas Erceg
(9/9) Kansas City bolstered its bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring two relievers who carry plenty of upside. Unfortunately, Hunter Harvey (back) hasn't pitched much for the Royals, but Lucas Erceg has been excellent - tallying 6 of the team's past 7 saves. Erceg has posted excellent ratios since joining Kansas City, compiling a 3.63 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 21:2 K:BB over 17.1 innings. Kris Bubic appears to have overtaken James McArthur and Chris Stratton as the Royals' preferred setup option, but that has yet to translate into save opportunities. McArthur, who still leads the Royals with 18 saves overall, has been much better since his late-July collapse in high-leverage. Since August 1, he's posted a 1.35 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 13.1 innings.

Los Angeles Angels

Total Saves: 34
Next in Line: Roansy Contreras , Matt Moore 60-Day IL
(9/9) To no surprise, the Angels traded pending free agents Carlos Estevez (Phillies) and Luis Garcia (Red Sox) at the deadline, opening up save opportunities in Anaheim. Ben Joyce has been the primary beneficiary, tallying 4 of the Halos' 5 saves since the August 1st. Roansy Contreras recorded the other and figures to be next in line, but he's allowed 7 runs (6 earned) over his last 5 appearances. Hunter Strickland has also received high leverage work, but has permitted eight walks and 4 home runs over his last 16.1 innings. Joyce figures to get run as the Angels' closer for the rest of the season, but save chances may be limited with the team scuffling overall (12-23 since August 1).

Los Angeles Dodgers
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Total Saves: 46
Closer: Committee
(8/20) Five different relievers have recorded at least one save for the Dodgers in the month of August thus far. Daniel Hudson and the newly acquired Michael Kopech lead the team with 2 apiece, while Anthony Banda, Landon Knack and Evan Phillips have all tallied one. Phillips - who leads Los Angeles with 16 saves overall - recorded the Dodgers' most recent save; his first in nearly a month. Phillips appears to have overcome the struggles that plagued him in July (11.74 ERA, 2.22 WHIP), ripping off 9 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run. His current form moves him back to the top of the Dodgers hierarchy for saves, while Kopech is likely to mix in once he rests up.

  2. 10/6:The Dodgers' highest-leverage relievers are well rested, as Jansen, Treinen and Vesia enter Wednesday's NL Wild Card game against the Cardinals on 4 days rest.
Miami Marlins
Team: Miami Marlins
Total Saves: 28
Closer: Calvin Faucher 15-Day IL
Next in Line: Jesus Tinoco , John McMillon 15-Day IL
(9/9) Miami's bullpen hierarchy was heavily impacted after they traded A.J. Puk to Arizona, Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to San Diego and Huascar Brazoban to the New York Mets. Calvin Faucher (shoulder) - not Andrew Nardi (elbow) - ended up being the Marlins' preferred option for saves. Faucher recorded six saves for Miami before hitting the IL with right shoulder impingement. With Nardi now out for the rest of the season, that leaves Jesus Tinoco, John McMillon and Anthony Bender as the most likely candidates for saves. Tinoco pitched the 9th inning during Miami's latest win, so he tentatively sits atop the hierarchy until the team actually has a save chance. McMillon and Bender could be factors, but it's hard to get excited about any reliever in the Marlins bullpen, as save chances will be hard to come by.

(9/9) After missing nearly 4 months with two stress fractures in his back, Devin Williams has comfortably reclaimed closing duties for Milwaukee. The righty has 9 saves in 10 chances with excellent ratios and a remarkable 45% strikeout rate. Trevor Megill took over the closer role in late-April and was outstanding, compiling 20 saves with excellent ratios and a near 30 percent strikeout rate. (9/10) Jhoan Duran has secured 7 of the Twins' last 10 saves dating back to August 1st, including 4 in a row. The flamethrower's strikeouts are down (27.4%) compared to recent seasons and a 55% left-on-base percentage has attributed to an inflated 3.99 ERA. He has a 4.85 ERA and 1.31 WHIP since the beginning of August (13 innings) so his "Medium" stability tag remains, especially with Griffin Jax (8 saves), Cole Sands (4) and Jorge Alcala (15 holds) performing well as part of Minnesota's late-inning hierarchy.

(9/10) The Mets overhauled their leverage ladder to closer Edwin Diaz near the trade deadline, DFA'ing both Shintaro Fujinami and Jake Diekman while acquiring Ryne Stanek, Huascar Brazoban, Phil Maton and Tyler Zuber (who has since been optioned). None are expected to see save chances while Edwin Diaz is healthy and in good form - he's posted a 2.19 ERA and 0.81 WHIP since mid-June - but the overhaul was eye-opening considering New York is in the thick of the NL Wild Card race. (9/9) Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently indicated the team will get "creative" with the closer role going forward, which could still include the struggling Clay Holmes, depending on matchups. Holmes leads the league with 11 blown saves, 6 of which came over the past two months despite otherwise decent results (2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP). Don't be surprised if the Yankees elect to give Holmes another day of rest with Chapman back. It's possible Chapman gets the call tonight if a save opportunity were to arise.
  2. 6/29:Aroldis Chapman is likely to return Friday.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game, Aroldis Chapman has a career 6.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in 14 innings at Fenway Park. However, he logged a 2.70 ERA against Boston this season with a 8:4 K:BB in 6.2 innings, albeit with two home runs allowed.
  4. 9/29:Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) will likely be activated Wednesday.
Oakland Athletics
Team: Oakland Athletics
Total Saves: 32
Next in Line: Tyler Ferguson , Austin Adams 15-Day IL
(9/10) Mason Miller hasn't hit many rough patches this season, but has allowed 7 runs (5 earned) over his last 4 appearances. He still leads qualified relievers with a 42.5% strikeout rate and his ratios are still remarkable (2.43 ERA, 0.88 WHIP) even with the recent hiccups. Miller leads relievers in fastball velocity, averaging 100.9 mph on the pitch and his status as the A's closer is not in question, especially since he's recorded 8 of the team's past 9 saves since the beginning of August. (9/10) After trading Seranthony Dominguez to Baltimore, Philadelphia swung a deal to acquire Carlos Estevez, one of the best relievers available on the market. Estevez is a rental - he's a free-agent after this season - but is in the midst of a fantastic campaign, compiling a 2.31 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 24 between the Angels and Phillies. Through 15 appearances with Philadelphia, Estevez has racked up 4 saves and 3 wins, though his stability as the team's closer remains tepid since Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm have been part of the saves mix since his acquisition. (9/10) David Bednar's performance has been inconsistent this season and his recent results (10.97 ERA, 2.34 WHIP, 3 BS in August) forced Pirates manager Derek Shelton to temporarily remove him the closer role. Since then, Aroldis Chapman has recorded 3 saves for Pittsburgh, while Dennis Santana has recorded one. Bednar struggled with his command in a recent outing on Sep 7, issuing three walks over one inning, so it may be another week or two before he has the opportunity to reclaim closing duties. San Diego Padres
Team: San Diego Padres
Total Saves: 38
Next in Line: Tanner Scott , Jason Adam
(9/10) San Diego were major players in the relief market at the trade deadline, acquiring Tanner Scott, Jason Adam and Bryan Hoeing to join an already solid relief unit. The trio joins Robert Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon to form a stellar late-inning corps as the team fights for an NL Wild Card spot, and potentially the NL West division (they're currently 5.5 games back of the Dodgers). Despite the acquisitions, Robert Suarez has continued to serve as the Padres closer, securing 8 of the team's past 11 saves since the beginning of August. The right-hander has been outstanding this season with 31 saves (T4th in the league) overall and a 1.02 WHIP. For someone who averages 99 mph on his fastball, Suarez doesn't strike many batters out (23.1% K-rate), but he doesn't walk many batters (6.2%) either. Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Total Saves: 50
(9/10) Manager Oliver Marmol expressed his desire to deploy Helsley in a more traditional closer role this season and the right-hander was first in the majors to surpass 40 saves in 2024. Helsley has seen a bit of a decline in his peripherals this season, posting his lowest K/9 rate (10.5) along with his highest WHIP (1.17) since 2021.
