Arizona Diamondbacks
Team: Arizona Diamondbacks
Total Saves: 35
Next in Line: Paul Sewald , A.J. Puk
(9/3) Justin Martinez has stabilized as the D'Backs' closer, recording the 7 saves for Arizona. His 1.35 WHIP over the last month and 1.24 WHIP overall could be better, but the rookie right-hander clearly has the "stuff" fit for the 9th-inning, averaging 100.2 mph on his fastball while mixing it with a devastating splitter that opposing batters have trouble squaring up against (.087 BAA). Paul Sewald, who was demoted from Arizona's closer role in July, has been much better of late (3.75 ERA, 1.08 WHIP since Aug 1), but it doesn't appear he'll be getting his job back anytime soon. If things do turn south for Martinez, manager Torey Lovullo has a deep bullpen to deploy as Arizona continues its playoff push, with A.J. Puk, Ryan Thompson, Kevin Ginkel and Dylan Floro all capable of stepping into closing duties.

Atlanta Braves
Team: Atlanta Braves
Total Saves: 37
(9/3) Raisel Iglesias isn't getting the attention he deserves this season. Perhaps it's because he's not striking out many batters in 2024 - his 27.1% strikeout rate is his lowest since 2016 - but his 0.61 WHIP is the best among qualified relievers and he ranks 7th in the league with 28 saves. Atlanta has been plagued by injuries to key players this season, which caps Iglesias' save upside since they aren't winning as many games as expected. With A.J. Minter (hip) currently on the shelf and needing surgery, Joe Jimenez and Pierce Johnson represent the best option for ancillary saves if Iglesias is unavailable.

Team Notes
  1. 6/29:A.J. Minter, who logged his first save of the season Tuesday at Philadelphia, has appeared in 3 games in 4 days. This makes Will Smith the likeliest candidate for a save chance if one were to arise Wednesday.
Baltimore Orioles
Team: Baltimore Orioles
Total Saves: 43
(9/3) Seranthony Dominguez has recorded 7 of the Orioles' past 9 saves since August 1st, but his appearances haven't always been sharp. The veteran righty has served up 5 home runs since that date - all solo homers and all in different outings. Dominguez has made up for it, though, with a 1.00 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB over his last 12 innings. Craig Kimbrel hasn't recorded a save in well over a month (July 7th) and won't be challenging Dominguez for the closer role any time soon. He allowed seven runs over 8.2 innings last month with a 8:5 K:BB and his ratios look a tad inflated. Baltimore's pen has been shaky in general during the second half, which figures to give Dominguez some leash.

Boston Red Sox
Team: Boston Red Sox
Total Saves: 35
Next in Line: Liam Hendriks 60-Day IL, Chris Martin
(9/3) Boston recently swapped a pair of relievers on the IL, welcoming the returns of Chris Martin and Justin Slaten, but replacing them with their 2 relief acquisitions at the trade deadline - Lucas Sims (lat) and Luis Garcia (elbow). More importantly, Liam Hendriks (elbow) is expected to return this weekend, providing some added experience in the late-innings ahead of closer Kenley Jansen. Jansen posted an outstanding 0.40 WHIP over 10 August innings in August and currently ranks tied for 8th with 25 saves. Jansen has a respectable 73.5% team save share and figures to close out the year in the role.

Team Notes
  1. 6/27:Tanner Houck was placed on the restricted list Monday prior to Boston's three-game series at Toronto. Matt Strahm and John Schreiber are the likeliest candidates for save opportunities should any arise during the series.
  2. 10/11:Hansel Robles exited Game 3 of the ALDS on Sunday due to a stomach illness after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. He should be considered day-to-day due to his illness. Assuming he tests negative for COVID-19, it wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander available for Game 4 on Monday. It was the first earned run he's allowed since August 29.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game against the Yankees, Hansel Robles has not allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive outings. Both he and Adam Ottavino enter tonight's contest with two-days rest, while Garrett Richards and Garrett Whitlock have had one day of rest after both pitched on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs
Team: Chicago Cubs
Total Saves: 31
Closer: Committee
(9/3) The Cubs have made several bullpen changes since the trade deadline. First they shipped Mark Leiter to the Yankees and acquired Nate Pearson from Toronto. They also released veteran Hector Neris. Since then, it has been a closer-by-committee in Chicago, with Porter Hodge, Jorge Lopez and Keegan Thompson all recording saves since mid-August. Hodge stands out as the leader of the pack, as he's currently in the best form.

Cincinnati Reds
Team: Cincinnati Reds
Total Saves: 30
Closer: Alexis Diaz
(9/3) Alexis Diaz has compiled poor ratios and a 13.2% walk rate through early September, but his security as the Reds closer doesn't appear to be in question, even after blowing a few saves recently. The Reds have slipped in the NL Wild Card standings, so it's always a possibility that they afford others save chances as the season winds down, but Diaz remains "the guy" for now.

Cleveland Guardians
Team: Cleveland Guardians
Total Saves: 47
(9/3) After leading MLB in saves the past two seasons, Emmanuel Clase is once again near the top of the leaderboard at the beginning of September. The hard-throwing righty is one save behind league-leader Ryan Helsley (42) and is displaying impeccable control while slightly improving his strikeout rate. With 2023 setup man Trevor Stephan (elbow) out for the year, Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis and Tim Herrin have ascended the leverage ladder to important setup roles.

Colorado Rockies
Team: Colorado Rockies
Total Saves: 33
Next in Line: Victor Vodnik 15-Day IL, Justin Lawrence
(9/3) Colorado's bullpen was impacted by the relievers they traded away. Jalen Beeks led the Rockies with nine saves prior to his trade to Pittsburgh, while Nick Mears - who may have ascended the Rockies' leverage ladder in Beeks' absence - was also dealt to Milwaukee. Victor Vodnik (biceps) got some run as the Rockies' closer, but is currently on the shelf. Tyler Kinley has picked up two saves since then and figures to remain in the role while Vodnik is out.

Chicago White Sox
Team: Chicago White Sox
Total Saves: 18
Closer: Committee
(9/3) The White Sox have only recorded 1 save since mid-July; that going to Chad Kuhl on August 16th. They've lost 37 of their past 41 games, so it's kind of hard to tell who could benefit from potential save chances since winning games has been challenging, to say the least. Prelander Berroa and Jordan Leasure (shoulder) have closer-of-the-future upside, but the latter is currently on the IL. No one else really stands out from a team that is playing this poorly.

Detroit Tigers
Team: Detroit Tigers
Total Saves: 34
Closer: Committee
(8/19) The Tigers have used a different reliever for each of their past 5 saves. Jason Foley - who leads Detroit with 16 saves this season - picked up the team's most recent save, but Will Vest, Tyler Holton and Shelby Miller have been part of the late-inning equation as well, with Joey Wentz even logging a 3-inning save recently. Foley is considered the favorite at the moment, as he's currently in the best form (3 R, 0 ER allowed with a 0.65 WHIP in August), but stability is very low since manager A.J. Hinch has shown willingness to deploy various relievers in the 9th inning.

Houston Astros
Team: Houston Astros
Total Saves: 35
Closer: Josh Hader
(8/2) Houston shored up their left-handed relief depth by acquiring Caleb Ferguson at the trade deadline. His presence shouldn't translate into save opportunities, but this gives the Astros another option besides Josh Hader to tackle left-handed hitters in the late innings (.196 BAA vs. LHB). The Astros closer (Hader) wasn't sharp in July (5.23 ERA, 4 HR allowed), but is not at risk of losing his role despite Ryan Pressly performing well for an extended period (1.77 ERA, 1.03 WHIP since June 1). Bryan Abreu has been solid, but also carries a 12.3% walk rate.

Team Notes
  1. 7/1:Ryan Pressly has recorded a Save in each of the past 2 days. He has yet to work 3 games in a row this season, so it's likely a save chance would go to Rafael Montero on Friday.
  2. 9/29:Ryan Pressly is currently managing a knee issue and hasn't pitched since Saturday. Kendall Graveman was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. Look for Ryne Stanek or Yimi Garcia as the favorites to pitch in potential save opportunities for the next couple days if Pressley remains unavailable.
Kansas City Royals
Team: Kansas City Royals
Total Saves: 35
Closer: Committee
(8/1) Kansas City bolstered its bullpen with two relievers who carry plenty of upside. Lucas Erceg was a long-term add (he's not a free-agent until 2030) who has the potential to slide into the majority share of a closer committee as soon as the Royals' next game. James McArthur has racked up 18 saves through July, but has had a few disaster outings recently and could be given a break from closing, although no formal announcement has been made on that front. As inconsistent as the newly acquired Hunter Harvey has been this season, he's among the league leaders with 28 holds. Both he and Erceg are huge upgrades in the late innings over Chris Stratton, John Schreiber (knee) and Will Smith.

Los Angeles Angels
Team: Los Angeles Angels
Total Saves: 33
Closer: Ben Joyce
(8/2) To no surprise, the Angels traded pending free agents Carlos Estevez (Phillies) and Luis Garcia (Red Sox) at the deadline, opening up save opportunities in Anaheim. Ben Joyce is the most popular reliever to target thanks to his strikeout upside and 17-game scoreless streak, but manager Ron Washington may elect to split save chances between the young flamethrower and some veterans. Hunter Strickland blew the Angels' first save chance after the deadline, whiel Matt Moore, Roansy Contreras and Hans Crouse are all candidates for more high leverage work. Consider this situation unsettled until we see more usage patterns unfold when the Angels are leading late in games.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Total Saves: 45
Closer: Committee
(8/20) Five different relievers have recorded at least one save for the Dodgers in the month of August thus far. Daniel Hudson and the newly acquired Michael Kopech lead the team with 2 apiece, while Anthony Banda, Landon Knack and Evan Phillips have all tallied one. Phillips - who leads Los Angeles with 16 saves overall - recorded the Dodgers' most recent save; his first in nearly a month. Phillips appears to have overcome the struggles that plagued him in July (11.74 ERA, 2.22 WHIP), ripping off 9 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run. His current form moves him back to the top of the Dodgers hierarchy for saves, while Kopech is likely to mix in once he rests up.

  2. 10/6:The Dodgers' highest-leverage relievers are well rested, as Jansen, Treinen and Vesia enter Wednesday's NL Wild Card game against the Cardinals on 4 days rest.
Miami Marlins
Team: Miami Marlins
Total Saves: 27
Closer: Calvin Faucher 15-Day IL
Next in Line: Andrew Nardi 60-Day IL, Anthony Bender
(8/2) Miami's bullpen hierarchy was heavily impacted after they traded A.J. Puk to Arizona, Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to San Diego and Huascar Brazoban to the New York Mets. Calvin Faucher, Andrew Nardi and Anthony Bender remain, with Faucher working the ninth inning of Wednesday's 6-2 win over Tampa Bay. Nardi worked the sixth inning of that game when the Marlins were only up by two runs, so he may pitch in the highest-leverage situations, which may or may not fall in the ninth inning. Faucher is riding an eight-game scoreless streak but has a 1.36 WHIP on the season. Bender earned six saves for Miami back in 2022 and has been solid thus far (3.83 ERA, 1.25 WHIP). I added Nardi prior to Miami's flurry of trades and will likely hold another week while this sorts itself out. Based on recent usage, Faucher might have been the correct reliever to speculate on, but it's hard to get excited about any reliever in the Marlins bullpen, as save chances will be hard to come by.

Milwaukee Brewers

Total Saves: 45
(7/29) After missing nearly 4 months with two stress fractures in his back, Devin Williams appears to have reclaimed closing duties in short order, as his fill-in replacement - Trevor Megill (back) - was recently placed on the IL. Megill took over the closer role in late-April and was outstanding, compiling 20 saves with excellent ratios and a near 30 percent strikeout rate. He'll miss some time with a back injury, but should slot right back into a high-leverage role if he's able to return. In the meantime, Williams won't pitch on back-to-back days, meaning the Brewers will look to Joel Payamps, Elvis Peguero and Hoby Milner for ancillary save chances.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli has shown a willingness to call Duran's number in high-leverage spots outside of the 9th-inning as well, as the flamethrower has only recorded 6 of Minnesota's last 10 saves. Griffin Jax (7 saves through early August) and Cole Sands (3) have benefitted when Duran is unavailable or pitches earlier in games.

(8/2) The Mets recently overhauled their leverage ladder to closer Edwin Diaz, DFA'ing both Shintaro Fujinami and Jake Diekman while acquiring Ryne Stanek, Huascar Brazoban, Phil Maton and Tyler Zuber (who has since been optioned). None are expected to see save chances while Edwin Diaz is healthy and in good form - he's posted a 0.82 ERA and 0.91 WHIP since mid-June - but the overhaul is eye-opening considering New York is in the thick of the NL Wild Card race. Reed Garrett (elbow) was recently cleared for a minor league rehab assignment and would figure to be the best option for ancillary saves upon his return. Until then, Ryne Stanek and/or Huascar Brazoban may take on that role if Diaz were to be unavailable.

Total Saves: 38

(8/1) Yankees closer Clay Holmes was inconsistent in July (1.41 WHIP, 3 SV, 4 BS) and now has legit competition for saves in Mark Leiter, whom New York acquired at the trade deadline. Leiter, who boasts a career-best 34 percent strikeout rate and 16.9 percent swinging strike percentage, has a 2.22 FIP that is nearly two full points lower than his 4.10 ERA. I expect Holmes to get the next save chance for New York, but manager Aaron Boone is no stranger to using him earlier in games against tough lineup pockets. If he reverts back to this type of usage, Leiter stands to benefit with potential save chances.

Don't be surprised if the Yankees elect to give Holmes another day of rest with Chapman back. It's possible Chapman gets the call tonight if a save opportunity were to arise.
  2. 6/29:Aroldis Chapman is likely to return Friday.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game, Aroldis Chapman has a career 6.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in 14 innings at Fenway Park. However, he logged a 2.70 ERA against Boston this season with a 8:4 K:BB in 6.2 innings, albeit with two home runs allowed.

(7/29) After trading Seranthony Dominguez to Baltimore, Philadelphia swung a deal to acquire Carlos Estevez, one of the best relievers available on the market. Estevez is a rental - he's a free-agent after this season - but is in the midst of a fantastic campaign, compiling a 2.38 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 20 saves with the Angels prior to the trade. His new manager Rob Thomson takes a committee approach to the ninth inning, but Estevez should slot ahead of both Jose Alvarado (13 saves) and Jeff Hoffman (nine saves) on the closer depth chart. While it's not yet clear how manager Mike Shildt plans to handle the closer role, Suarez has been outstanding this season with 23 saves in 26 chances and a 0.84 WHIP. The 25-year-old flamethrower still walks too many batters (11.5% walk rate), but he's managed outstanding ratios with a career-high 18 saves and counting. Seattle recently acquired Yimi Garcia, who has closing experience and is having a phenomenal season himself, but Munoz should remain atop the closer depth chart in Seattle. He's recorded 20 of the Giants' 21 saves through early August for an impressive 95% team save share, so his security doesn't appear to be in jeopardy, but he'll need to improve his 1.61 WHIP and 14% walk rate to continue receiving the bulk of save chances in San Francisco.
